Avila Naturalle Supports Initiative to Help Young People Find Purpose and Potentials
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global non-formal education framework which challenges young people to discover their potential and find their purpose, passion and place in the world. Since 1956 millions of young people have taken part in the Award, in more than 130 countries and territories. Founded by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh KG, KT in 1956, in conjunction with Kurt Hahn, the German educationalist, the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation drives and supports the Award’s global growth, so more young people can take part. In Nigeria, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award operates under the name The International Award for Young People Nigeria.
In the federal Republic of Nigeria, The Award was introduced in the 1970s, and was not launched officially until 1986 under the name The Nigeria National Youth Award(NNYA). The Award was however reintroduced in 2014.
The Award is a global framework for non-formal education, which challenges young people aged 14 to 24 to find their purpose, passion and place in the world by equipping them with the skills and confidence to discover their potential.
The Award is a framework of activities. Each young person who takes part in the Award learns a skill, improves their physical fitness, volunteers in their community and experiences a team adventure in a new environment. Success in the Award is measured by regular participation over a fixed period of time while showing commitment and progress in each activity. All participants are supported by a network of adult mentors called Award Leaders, Assessors, and Coordinators.

As a brand that is committed to enriching lives and inspiring a healthier and happier world, Avila Naturalle is excited to be a key sponsor of part of the activities of the Award’s initiative within Government Senior Secondary Schools of Lagos State in the year 2023, showcasing various activities and remarkable endeavours undertaken by Award participants as they find their purpose, passion, and place in the world.
This partnership is part of the company’s commitment to enrich the lives of young people in line with its brand philosophy of righting the wrongs in society. This time, Avila saw an opportunity to support an initiative that will bring positive impact in the society and happiness to the respective families, communities of the participants and ultimately, the larger society.
In August 2023, The Awards engaged over 3,000 students from these government schools as Award participants at the Bronze level. To be able to participate in the Award, interested students were tasked with completing an Award expression of interest form that would enable them to understand the level of commitment required towards their personal development.
Licence presentation was also carried out for all 89 schools across the Six Education Districts in Lagos state. The Licensing event was aimed at informing the principals of the expectations from each school regarding the delivery of the Award and their expectations from us as the National Award Operator. It also included the presentation of a licence agreement and certificate to each school as a licensed Award Centre.
In conclusion, the Award in Lagos State Senior Secondary Schools reveals a tapestry of inspiration, resilience, and community impact. The diverse array of Award projects undertaken by participants reflects not only their commitment to personal growth but also their profound dedication to contributing meaningfully to the communities they inhabit.
