IS YOUR SKIN PURGING?
Ever been in a situation where you start using a new skincare product and you suddenly realize that your face is getting worse than it was before? You might be experiencing a process called SKIN PURGING.
Skin purging is when your skin is reacting to an active ingredient and that ingredient is increasing the rate of skin cell turnover. Skin cell turnover is when your skin begins to shed dead cells faster than normal to reveal the fresh, younger-looking skin beneath. This simply means that when a new skincare product is introduced into your routine, it may speed up your pimple formations, bringing all the build-up that’s lurking under the surface of your skin.
The process known as skin purging allows some other things to rise to the top of your skin before the healthy cells can find their way to the surface. It helps to expose the fresh skin cells underneath and reveal clearer younger-looking skin.
A purging period can prompt all kinds of pimples. Certain skincare products can also get trapped in our pores, which is why flare-ups can be fuelled if you try a new product.
This might be frustrating to go through but just think of it as the bad phase you must go through before things get better.
Now, let’s get into the difference between purging and having a breakout.
Purging and breakouts can have slightly different appearances. Skin purge occurs at the normal spots that you would usually have acne. If you are experiencing breakouts in new areas, then this is a normal breakout that could be caused by so many factors such as stress, hormonal imbalance, hygiene, and so on. Another way to tell the difference is that Skin purging appears and disappears faster than a normal pimple, but breakouts typically take 8 to 10 days to appear, mature, and shrink.
Research has also shown that the life cycle of a purge is quite different from that of a normal breakout as your normal breakouts tend to stay longer on your skin. You should take notes of all the signs and if the signs you notice are similar to that of a skin purge, then there is not much you can do aside from having a little patience and waiting it out.
Above all, Skin purging is a phase that you have to stick through to get desired results.
